Chamber Orientation including Dry Dive (Group bookings only)
1 day chamber orientation course, including chamber dive. Group bookings only.
Description
Summary
The HSE Scuba Qualification (previously known as Part IV) is an approved diving qualification under the Diving at Work Regulations 1997. Part of the course requires a 'dive' in a hyperbaric recompression chamber. This one day Chamber Orientation Course has been specifically created to provide all the criteria required.
The course provides a foundational understanding of hyperbaric chambers, including their design, operation, and use in treating diving-related injuries, like decompression sickness. The course includes practical demonstrations and hands-on experience with chamber equipment. It also covers fire safety, mechanical hazards, and physiological hazards within the chamber environment.
As a member of a dive team, a professional diver will be expected to:
- have knowledge, under supervision, of the functions and procedures for operating a two-compartment recompression chamber
- have knowledge, under supervision, of the functions and procedures for acting as an Attendant inside the chamber
- be familiar with a recompression chamber, in terms of function and layout, uses and limitations
- be familiar with the symptoms and effects of nitrogen narcosis (completion of a 40m chamber dive)
- have knowledge of the process of a therapeutic recompression, specifically to understand how the condition of the patient is assessed and monitored
- have knowledge of the post-dive checks and maintenance, including hygiene and maintenance procedures
- have knowledge of a chamber shut-down, in accordance with operational procedures
Core Modules:
- Physics and physiology of diving: Understanding how pressure affects the body and how it relates to diving.
- Current legislation and regulations: Familiarity with relevant standards and guidelines for chamber operation.
- Chamber design and operation: Learning about different chamber types and how they work.
- Gas systems and equipment: Understanding the various gases used in chambers and the equipment used to manage them.
- Documentation and record-keeping: Learning how to properly document chamber dives and treatment procedures.
- Practical Experience:
- Dry dive - simulating a 40m dive in a chamber environment to experience pressure changes and chamber operation.
- Chamber orientation - touring a hyperbaric chamber facility and observing the equipment and procedures.
- DCI presentation - learning about Decompression Sickness (DCS) and its treatment.
- Simulated treatment scenarios - practicing decompression procedures and emergency responses in the chamber.
Course Outcomes:
- Understanding of chamber operation: A basic understanding of how to operate and maintain a chamber.
- Awareness of safety procedures: Knowledge of potential hazards within the chamber and how to prevent them.
- Recognition of DCS and other diving-related injuries: Ability to recognize symptoms and understand treatment protocols.
- Practical experience: Hands-on experience with chamber equipment and procedures.
Additional modules for First Aid at Work and Oxygen Administration can be added if required.
This course is for groups only (min of 4 people).
