STCW (MCA) Proficiency in Medical First Aid

Approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, this four day course is designed for seafarers who are designated to provide medical first aid on board ship in accordance with STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended.

Description

This practical four-day course is for seafarers designated to provide first aid on board ship and for those needing certificates of competency. The course will equip you with the knowledge to apply immediate first aid to an injured casualty and to a person suffering illness on board. 

Core Activities

  • The course balances theoretical input with practical scenario based situations in a maritime emergency environment.
  • Use of a purpose built ship’s medical room is available and live, ‘casualties’ (actors) increase the sense of realism.

Accreditation

After successfully completing an MCA-approved training programme in Medical First Aid you will meet the standards of competency specified in section A-VI/4-1 of the STCW Code.

 

Certification

Updating of the Proficiency in Medical First Aid is not currently required under the STCW Code and therefore no refresher training is required for the revalidation of Certificates of Competency.

There are no pre-requisites.

This five-day course is for seafarers designated to take charge of medical care on board vessels and those that must hold a recognised Proficiency in Medical Care or Updated Proficiency in Medical Care Certificate.

This is a Health & Safety Executive approved 4-day course that complies with the Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First Aid) Regulations 1989. Offshore personnel are trained to a standard where they can administer basic First Aid on their own and provide assistance to the Offshore Medic when necessary.

The Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First Aid) Regulations 1989 placed a duty on those in control of offshore installations, pipeline works, or any associated activities to make provision for persons to administer first aid and emergency treatment to those who become ill or injured at work. This is a UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approved offshore medic training course which encompasses all aspects of the legal requirements, alongside the latest clinical thinking.

The Offshore Medic Refresher course is required every three years and includes training and assessment in CPR, first aid, AED, oxygen administration and intravenous/osseous techniques.
